Hemorrhoids accumulate during pregnancy due to the increased pressure of blood flow from the growing uterus that presses on the rectal area. How can a pregnant woman know if the discomfort she feels is caused by hemorrhoids? Symptoms of hemorrhoids include bloody stool (bright blood on the stool or mixing with the water in the toilet bowl), pain, itching, and discomfort in the rectum.


What are some safe treatment options for pregnant women? Well, you can apply cold compress directly on the affected part. The compress can significantly reduce the size of the hemorrhoids. In addition, when the hemorrhoids start to itch, have a warm bath with a half cup of baking soda, but make it quick. Baking soda can relieve the itchiness but too much exposure to it can irritate the hemorrhoids.


You can use topical ointments or creams for hemorrhoids, but you need to make sure those are safe for pregnant women’s use. You’d also do well to use a nursing pillow or doughnut-shaped pillow to allow support and prevent the hemorrhoids from direct surface contact since this could increase pressure and make the condition worse.
